The redevelopment works of Varkala Railway Station has been awarded to joint venture of Kerala Rail Development Corporation Ltd. (KRDCL) and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) by the Southern Railway, under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The project aims to integrate a 12.06-acre station complex with additional infrastructure for a seamless passenger experience. With a current daily passenger flow of 20,135, the projected footfall is expected to reach 29,244 per day over the next 45 years. The project includes a new main station building, a roof plaza/air concourse connecting both sides of the track, Platform redevelopment, and external developments like access roads, pick and drop points, canopies, green spaces, and public areas. The project cost is Rs 123.36 Cr and the completion period is 2.5 years.
The work includes reconstruction of main Station Building, Construction of Entry and Exit Gates , 36m Departure Air-concourse , 6 m wide Arrival FOB , Extension of existing Arrival FOB, Substation, SSE/Pway Quarters , Internal Roads with WMM & Bituminous top, Surface parking area, Footpath with PCC base, Strom water drains, Platform surfacing and roofing , Boundary Wall, Sewage Treatment Plant , Under Ground Water Tank , Construction & commissioning of new Electrical Sub-Station building, Electric Room, Drainage network & provision of underground ducts for cables, Water softening, new customer friendly passenger amenities, Green Area including landscaping, installation of Artwork & Mural Painting etc as per design requirement. The work commenced and progressing as per schedule.
