Redevelopment of Trivandrum Central Railway Station

The redevelopment work of Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station under Amrit Bharat Station scheme has been awarded to joint venture of Kerala Rail Development Corporation Ltd. (KRDCL) and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) by the Southern Railways for a total amount of Rs. 438.95 Cr. The completion period for the project is 3.5 years. The objective of the project is to modernize the Railway station and establish a fresh, iconic identity for this renowned tourist location, elevating the transportation standards of the capital city to international levels. The entire construction will adhere to green building norms.

  •  Two new 4.5 lakh square feet, 10-story buildings at the main side of the station, with 6 floors, dedicated to commercial use.
  • Another 7 lakh square feet, 8-story building at the second entry side with, 4 floors designated for commercial purposes.
  • The front side of the north side blocks will have separate roofing canopies shaped like waves in aqua green color, providing a unique experience resembling the sea and beach in the sky view.
  • The Railway station will include separate 72m wide departure air-concourse and 12m wide arrival air-concourses for safe and easy circulation of passengers. An air concourse is a steel structure spanning across the Railway tracks, connecting all passenger platforms and both the south and north blocks of the station. The air concourse itself will have waiting areas, toilets, and retail spaces for food and other purposes. The existing platform shelters will also be redesigned to complement the architecture.
  • Thenorth side blocks and south side blocks will be linked with connecting bridges, and a skywalk will also be built to connect the Railway station and KRSTC bus stand.
  •  A 1.2 lakh square feet, 3-story multi-level car parking facility is proposed at the South side of the station, with a parking capacity of 52 four- wheelers, 17 two-wheelers, and 50 autos.
  • The project will also facilitate many other facilities within the Railway station premises, such as adequate parking, efficient multi-modal interfaces, flexibility for integration with future transport infrastructure, smooth arrival/departure and movement of pedestrians, passenger vehicles, parcel, luggage, linen & catering material etc., within and around station premises, state-of-the-art passenger information and display systems, security systems, and fire safety systems.
  •  Special amenities and services will be provided for elderly, infirm, and physically challenged passengers.
